College of Life and Environmental Sciences
Founded in Oct. 1997, College of Life and Environmental Sciences (CLES) consisted of Biology Department, Chemistry Department, Geography Department and Experiment Center. Geography Department was merged into College of Urban and Tourism in 1998. Meantime, CLES combined the College of Biology and Chemical Engineering to form the new College of Life and Environmental Sciences in Jan. 2002. CLES combined the Environmental Engineering Department in Oct. 2007. Now, CLES consists of 3 departments: Bioscience & Biotechnology , Chemistry & Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science & Technology.
CLES has a faculty of 227, including 46 professors and 66 associate professors. Ratio of who holding Ph.D. degree in 147 of professional teachers is more than 90%.
CLES has nine Bachelor degree programs. Bachelor of Science: Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology; Bachelor of Engineering: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Food Sciences and Engineering; Bachelor of Agriculture: Horticulture (Sino-Dutch); Bachelor of Education: Science Education. The total number of undergraduate students is 2100.
CLES has 4 Master degree programs in first-level disciplines: Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering and Ecology; 1 Master degree Program in second-level disciplines: Environmental Sciences. 1 Ph.D. program: Environmental Science. The total number of graduate students reaches 900. CLES offers Postdoctoral program in Environmental Science.
There are Shanghai Key Subjects: Rare Earth Functional Materials and Environmental Sciences, Key Subjects of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission: Physical Chemistry and Botany. CLES has got notable achievement in scientific research in recent years. From 2012 to 2016, teachers had obtained 3 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 82 other National Natural Science Fund, and more than 567 scientific research projects with gross outlay over 220 million Yuan; published 1373 papers and 56 books, including 895 SCI papers. Teachers have achieved various prizes in both teaching and research: 2 National Prizes for Technology and Natural Science, the highest prize in science and technology in China. Chemistry is top 1% in the world according to ESI statistics.
CLES processes two campuses named Xuhui and Fengxian covering 23,000 m2. Two botanic gardens covering an area of 6.6 acres used for both research and teaching. The equipment and facility investment for the labs is over 189 million Yuan. One Museum of Insects and Vertebrates, with a collection of over 3,000 species of vertebrates and 300,000 species of insects, it has become a leading and very popular site for science education for youth in Shanghai.
